On December 4, 2024, the 1st study session for the Tohoku Tourist Information Center Networking Project was held in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. Three staff members from Sendai Tourist Information Desk participated in the session. We’d like to post the report on our blog in three parts.
2024年12月4日に東北の観光案内所ネットワーク化事業 第1回研修会が秋田市で開催され、仙台ツーリストインフォメーションデスクからスタッフ3人が研修に参加しました。その様子を3回にわたってお届けします。

Ozawa will be in charge of the first part of the report. Around 10:30 am, attendees from across the Tohoku region gathered at JR Akita Station. After a brief introduction at the Tourist Information Center Akita City, located in front of the ticket gate, we embarked on a journey to explore the city’s must-see spots in Akita City!
初回は小沢が担当します。午前10時30分、参加者が東北各地から秋田駅に集まりました。秋田駅改札を出てすぐのところにある秋田観光案内所前で概要を伺い、いざ出発です。

This is the Tourist Information Center Akita City. They offer a useful service that they can store customers’ luggage and deliver it to a hotel where the customers will stay! (Charged)

さあ秋田の旅へ出発！

After leaving Akita Station, we reached the “Michi no Eki Akitako” area . As we stepped off the bus, the Port Tower Selion welcomed us!
秋田駅を出発して約20分、私たちは「道の駅あきた港　ポートタワー・セリオン」に到着しました。バスを降りるとセリオンタワーが出迎えてくれました！

The day we visited was cloudy and occasionally rainy, but luckily, the clouds cleared just as we arrived!
この日は朝から薄曇りで時々雨がふりましたが、到着時はちょうど雲が晴れてくれました！

Located in the “Michi no Eki Akitako” area, the Port Tower Selion is a 143-meter tower adorned with approximately 6,300 glass panels, constructed in 1994. You can enjoy its beautiful illuminations at night. We went up to the observation deck, located at a height of 100m.
道の駅あきた港　ポートタワー・セリオン内にあるセリオンタワーは、秋田港にある143ｍのポートタワーです。約6,300枚のガラスで囲まれたタワーは1994年に建てられました。夜はイルミネーションも楽しめます。高さ100ｍに展望室があるので、私たちも早速登っていきます。

There is no charge for entry to the observatory deck.

From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan. You can also see a lot of windmills! Did you know why they stand here? Every single windmill is a wind power generation facility!
セリオンタワー展望室からは、日本海が一望できます。そしてたくさんの風車が見えます！　この風車、いったい何だと思いますか？　実は風力発電のための設備なのです！　

The sight of these windmills, towering 90 meters above the sea with 54-meter blades, nearly the height of a 40-story building, is truly inspiring.
海面から90ｍ、そして羽の長さは54ｍ、40階建てのビルとほぼ同じ高さの風車が海の上に立ち並ぶ光景はまさに圧巻です。

Wind power generation is one of renewable energy systems that use the wind to generate electricity. The wind rotates blades to generate electric power. The energy of the rotation is transmitted to a generator to produce electricity. Akita Prefecture, which faces the Sea of Japan, is said to be one of the best locations in Japan for wind power generation because of its stable wind conditions throughout the year and its straight coastline. Thirteen offshore wind power generation facilities have been operation, and the commerci, the first of its kind in Japan.
風力発電は再生可能エネルギーのひとつです。風の力を利用して発電する方法であり、風車が風を受けて回転し、回転運動のエネルギーが発電機に伝わり電力が発生します。日本海に面した秋田県は、年間を通じて風況が安定していること、また海岸線がまっすぐであることから、国内でも有数の風力発電適地と言われています。秋田港では洋上風力発電13基が2022年より稼働し、 2023年1月には国内初となる商業運転が開始されました。

The wind power generation business has had a significant impact on the local economy. Many companies collaborate on facility installation, maintenance, and technician training. Tours are available to learn about wind power generation. Currently, most visitors are students for school trips, but some plans will be made to attract more people to enjoy the wonderful scenery with the windmills there, and the turbines themselves. We look forward to what kind of activities we can enjoy in the future!
風力発電事業が地域にもたらす経済効果はとても大きいものでした。風車の設置、メンテナンス、技術者の養成などたくさんの会社か連携し、この大きなプロジェクトを遂行しています。現在は修学旅行が中心ですが、風力発電について学ぶことができるツアーも実施されています。今後この風車があるすばらしい景色や、そして風車をより多くの人に楽しんでいただけるような取り組みを検討しているそうです。これからの活動に大注目ですね！

On the first floor, there is a market called the Serion Garden. You can purchase local specialties from Akita Prefecture, including fresh vegetables grown by local farmers.

The Port Tower Selion has a kids’ space and there is an indoor green park in the adjacent building Selion Rista. So this area is a great spot for families with small kids to enjoy regardless of weather or temperature.
セリオン内にはキッズスペース、また別棟のセリオンリスタには屋内緑地公園がありました。天候や気温に関係なく、小さなお子様も楽しめる場所ですね。

「道の駅あきた港　ポートタワー・セリオン」を満喫した私たちが次に向かったのは、おまちかねの昼食会です。今回は、「無限堂大町本店」で、日本三大うどんとして知られる、秋田名物稲庭うどんをいただきました。

Inaniwa udon originated in Inaniwa-cho, Yuzawa City, located in the southern part of Akita Prefecture. The history of Inaniwa Udon goes back to the Edo period. Blessed with fresh air, pure water and high-quality wheat, the area is a good place for udon-making. The feudal lord encouraged the villagers to make udon. The udon served at Mugendo, made with traditional techniques and great effort, is truly delicious!
稲庭うどんの発祥は、秋田県南部に位置する湯沢市稲庭町です。歴史は古く、江戸時代までさかのぼります。稲庭町は澄んだ空気と清冽な水に恵まれた、良質な小麦の産地でした。これに着目した藩主が、稲庭の村人たちに命じて、うどんを作らせたのが始まりです。伝統の技と、手間暇かけて丁寧に作られたうどんは、本当においしい！

Mugendo has three stores in Akita City. The one where we had lunch is Mugendo Omachi Honten featuring a very charming exterior reminiscent of a storehouse while still retaining the appearance of a merchant’s house. Once you step inside and you’ll feel a nostalgic atmosphere. In addition to homemade Inaniwa udon, you can also enjoy local specialties such as Akita’s local sake, Hinai-Jidori chicken, and Hatahata (Japanese sandfish). If you visit Akita, don’t miss the spot.
